World Water Academy delivers Operation and Maintenance course in Cairo, Egypt

IHE-Delft and World Water Academy combine forces with advanced operation & maintenance course in Egypt.

Helle Egypte

In collaboration with IHE Delft, World Water Academy was responsible for the development of a tailor-made course and providing an expert trainer. Course coordinator Bram Ooms was involved in the preparation of the course. Our water expert Helle van der Roest provided the training in Cairo in close collaboration with water experts Hadeel Hosney and Peter van der Steen from IHE Delft. The four-day course was delivered to wastewater engineers, operators, and managers and involved contributions of local Egyptian experts. In total a number of 36 participants were trained in the course.

This training course focuses on sharing practical knowledge and expertise of Wastewater Treatment Plants, with a specific focus on operation- & maintenance. Topics that were discussed in the course are:

  • Operation & Maintenance challenges
  • Fundamentals of wastewater treatment
  • Treatment systems
  • Activated sludge
  • Oxidation ponds
  • Sludge handling
  • Water re-use for agriculture
  • Innovations in wastewater

Waterzuivering-Egypt

The course has been designed with lots of interactive action learning methods like group assignments, multiple short presentations by the particpants and a field visit to a wastewater treatment plant. In the course participants receive the theoretical and practical knowledge to tackle several operation & maintenance challenges. The theoretical knowledge was directly applied in practice by the participants themselves to learn how to deal with their own existing operational challenges.

One of the particpants stated:

"I learned to choose plants according to the OPEX and CAPEX. I also learned how to use the challenges we have to solve the problems we face in wastewater treatment."

The course was highly appreciated by the participants and received a score of 8,6 out of 10.
