Wastewater Sludge Management
The treatment of wastewater is a complex process with various process steps. The handling of wastewater sludge (by process controllers) has an important influence on the results of the whole treatment process. Besides the final effluent, sludge is the main product of the wastewater treatment plant. The handling of sludge is an important cost factor in wastewater treatment.
The course provides a brief overview of the wastewater treatment processes and techniques. The main focus is on sludge. The techniques of handling sludge are discussed in detail, including digestion, dewatering, thickening and drying. The operational aspects and troubleshooting are taken into consideration. The current methods of sludge disposal are discussed. The participants become aware of sustainable ways of using sludge and regarding it as a resource rather than waste.
After attending the course the participants will understand how their activities in handling sludge links to the efficient performance of the wastewater treatment plant.
The course exists of the following topics:
- Introduction to sludge
- Sludge disposal
- Sludge reuse (‘waste as resource')
- Operation control possibilities
- Trouble shooting
- Relevant legislations and regulations
Course book and hand-outs of the presentations
Besides classroom presentations this course exists of interactive and innovative training methods, as group work, discussions, practical exercises, demonstrations, presentations, role-plays, will be tailored on the objectives to the reached during the training.
The course is one of the four modules of the overall course Wastewater Treatment for Process Controllers. A diploma for this course Wastewater Treatment can be gained after completing the four modules.
