Learning targets

Working in the water sector means regularly conducting measurements in wastewater and surface water. These measurements provide factual evidence for enforcing the Water Act, are essential for calculating levies, and play a key role in monitoring water quality. To ensure high-quality data, it's crucial to collect samples correctly—but how do you do that?

In the course “Wastewater and Surface Water Sampling”, you’ll learn the various purposes of sampling and gain practical experience working according to the official Guidelines on Sampling and Analysis in Environmental Offences issued by the Dutch Public Prosecution Service.

The following topics will be covered:

  • how to take samples according to NEN 6600 standards
  • how to apply NEN ISO 5667-3 norms for preserving, packaging, and transporting samples to a laboratory
  • common flow measurement methods for wastewater streams
  • the importance of quality assurance in sampling
  • proper calibration and maintenance of your equipment

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to carry out reliable sampling independently and with confidence.

After completing the course, you will have acquired the following knowledge and skills:

  • understanding the importance of proper sampling
  • ability to perform sampling accurately and effectively
  • awareness of safe sampling practices in the field

Program

We have carefully designed a varied and practical program for you. The Wastewater and Surface Water Sampling course consists of two full days. A one-day version is also available, depending on the group size and the type of sampling required. Each training day begins with theory in the morning—covering how to collect samples properly—followed by hands-on practice in the afternoon. This course is available exclusively as an in-company training, conducted on-site at a wastewater treatment facility. For specific sampling needs, we’ll identify suitable field locations.

The following topics are covered during the training:

  • properties of (waste) substances
  • types of samples and the role of the sampler; protocols for sample collection
  • NEN 6600 sampling standard
  • calibration of equipment
  • flow measurement of wastewater streams
  • commonly used sampling techniques; designing a sampling plan; sample preservation

Participant Contributions

At World Water Academy, we value both knowledge and practice. That’s why we expect each participant to bring real-world experience from their own work. What challenges do you face? Which experiences can you share so others can learn from them? In addition to the training sessions themselves, each participant should plan for approximately 4 hours of self-study per session.

Target group

The Wastewater and Surface Water Sampling course is designed for:

  • samplers and inspectors working for environmental agencies
  • water boards
  • environmental laboratories.

Learning Together

You’ll be part of a group of approximately 12 professionals following the course at the same time. This group-based format creates a dynamic and supportive learning environment where you can exchange knowledge, share experiences, and discuss real-life work situations with peers.
