(Senior) Dike Warden

To ensure safe living, working, and life in the Netherlands.

Learning path (Senior) Dike Warden

Dike wardens are employees of water boards or citizens who voluntarily check during high water whether the flood defenses are functioning properly and if there are any cracks or other damages. All dike wardens receive training to perform these inspections effectively. This training can be organized by the waterboard itself or by World Water Academy. We distinguish between Dike Wardens and Senior Dike Wardens.

To become a Senior Dike Warden, you must complete both the Dike Wardens training and an additional training program, either through the respective water board or World Water Academy. This training concludes with an exam administered by World Water Academy. The exam consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, lasts 30 minutes, and takes place on-site. If you answer 16 or more questions correctly, you pass and receive the Senior Dike Wardens certificate, demonstrating that you have the required knowledge. Water boards can exchange Senior Dike Wardens during emergencies based on this certificate, as it confirms they possess the same level of knowledge. The certificate is valid for 4 years.
