Rand Water employees recently took part in a one-day online wastewater treatment course, organized by World Water Academy. The training focused on key topics such as the water cycle, pre-treatment, activated sludge systems, nutrient removal, and settling processes.
Bridging theory and practice
Participants valued the course for its technical depth and practical relevance. One participant shared: “I now better understand how wastewater treatment works, including the chemistry, biology, and physical processes involved, as well as the role of sludge management and operator actions in plant performance.”
Innovative digital tools
The training distinguished itself with its innovative use of digital tools, including animations, drone footage of activated sludge systems, interactive quizzes, and a Google Maps exercise. In one activity, participants located treatment plants in their areas and created diagrams to better understand local operations.
The engaging digital methods earned praise from participants. One noted: “The facilitator employed a mix of multimedia presentations and live demonstrations that catered to various learning styles, keeping the session dynamic and interesting.”
Interactive and practice-oriented teaching
Since its establishment in 1994, World Water Academy has been a leader in water sector education, known for its interactive and practice-oriented teaching approaches. The Rand Water course reflected this philosophy, blending technical knowledge with engaging learning techniques.
Participants expressed their appreciation for this approach: “The course was presented engagingly and professionally, making the material both accessible and enjoyable. The instructor’s delivery was clear and well-organized.”
Strengthening Collaboration
This course was delivered as part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between World Water Academy and Rand Water, exemplifying their shared commitment to building capacity in water management.
