Basics of Wastewater Treatment
The treatment of wastewater is a complex process involving different process steps. Operators play a key role in the treatment of wastewater. Their decisions and actions have a major influence on the final treatment results.
In this basic course, you acquire knowledge on wastewater and wastewater treatment. The water cycle and the water chain approach are explained. The most important regulations and legislations in relation to wastewater treatment are described. To understand the behaviour of pollutants in water you learn the basics of chemistry and microbiology. The quantity and the composition of domestic and industrial waste water and the purpose of waste water treatment are clarified in this course. You will learn about various treatment techniques. This course covers physical, chemical and biological treatment steps.

- General introduction on the water cycle
- Why is waste water treated?
- Legislations/permits/ general introduction of green drop requirements
- Basic calculations
- Basics of chemistry and microbiology
- Basic of flow and hydraulics
- Domestic and industrial wastewater
- Main (waste)water parameters
- The process of a treatment plant
- Basics of process control
After successfully completing this course you will understand the wastewater treatment process. You will recognise how your actions influence the performance of your wastewater treatment plant.

In addition to classroom presentations this course comprises interactive and innovative training methods, such as group work, discussions, practical exercises, demonstrations and role-plays. The training methods are tailored to the objectives of the training.
This course includes a field trip to a wastewater treatment plant.
This course is one of four modules of the overall course Wastewater Treatment for Process Controllers. After successfully completing the four modules, the participant will be awarded a diploma.
