Symposium lays foundation for multi-year strategy
Which themes will shape the future of the water sector, and what does that demand from professionals? On September 3rd, we explored these questions with our partners in the watersector, subject-matter experts, and trainers during our symposium “Accelerating Water Knowledge”. The ideas and discussions around AI, the evolving human role, emerging skills, and the need for (international) collaboration form a valuable starting point for the multi-year strategy of World Water Academy and Wateropleidingen.
Gerhard van den Top, Chair of the Supervisory Board, and Mayor of Hilversum, opened the symposium together with CEO Gabrielle Knufman: ‘Today, we’re gathering your insights on the challenges facing the water sector. For inspiration – and to take new steps together.’
International security
Guest speaker and former naval officer Ben Bekkering emphasized water’s key role globally, both in climate change and security. “Persistent drought and growing poverty, for example, create more space for extremism. And building a dam can cause serious friction between neighboring countries.” How can we influence such global issues? His advice: form strategic partnerships and build trust. “Knowledge becomes power only when shared and when we’re curious about one another.”
Bringing water close to home
Sigrid Scherrenberg, R&D Manager at Haskoning and instructor at World Water Academy, focused on local action: ensure knowledge transfer and awareness regarding climate change, access to clean drinking water, and water conservation. “Make water visible – and start as early as possible. From primary school lesson plans to scientific research, from citizens to water specialists: we must do it together!”
Exchanging ideas
The conversation and exchange of ideas flourished during four workshops led by colleagues of World Water Academy, covering:
- AI and the water sector
- Skills needed for tomorrow
- Global water knowledge
- The evolving human role in the sector
Acceleration
The sum of meaningful conversations, engaging discussions, and shared experiences provides the inspiration for shaping our multi-year strategy: focused on strong collaboration and accelerating water knowledge.
A heartfelt thank you to all attendees for their valuable contributions!
